Becoming a Registered Speech-Language Pathologist (RSLP) in British Columbia involves passing one of two approved entry-to-practice examinations: the Praxis Examinations for speech-language pathology (Praxis Exam 5331) or the Canadian Entry-to-Practice (CETP) Examinations for speech-language pathology, administered by Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC).
Praxis Exam
The Praxis Exam, administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), is a flexible option for candidates. Here’s what you need to know:
- Registration: Follow the instructions in the Praxis Test Registration Guidance (December 28, 2020). You can register for the exam to be taken at home with live monitoring by an online proctor or at a test center. Note that home testing is available only in Canada and the US.
- Sending Scores: If you passed the Praxis Exam before September 2020, you can request ETS to send an “additional score report” to CHCPBC for a fee of $50 (US).
- Preparation: ETS offers various preparation materials, including a study companion, study plan, and interactive practice tests.
CETP Exam
The CETP Exam, administered by SAC, is another pathway. Here’s the key information:
- Enrollment and Dates: Exam enrollment and sitting dates are available on the SAC website.
- Registration Process: The College is working with SAC to confirm the registration process for BC candidates. Keep an eye on updates for the latest information.
Information for All Exams
Regardless of the exam you choose, here are some important points:
- Submitting Proof of Passing: Ensure your proof of passing is sent directly from the examination administrator to CHCPBC. Alternatively, another regulatory body can send your results if they received them directly from the examination administrator.
- Conditional Registration: If you haven’t passed an approved examination, apply for Conditional registration and practice under general supervision. Secure a practice supervisor who is a Full CHCPBC registrant in good standing.
- Examination Attempts: You are allowed a maximum of three attempts at the relevant CETP or Praxis Exam within two years from the date of your initial application.
