Understanding Autism in South Asian Immigrant Families: Breaking Barriers and Reducing Stigma

As practitioners dedicated to improving outcomes for children, it's crucial to understand the unique challenges faced by South Asian immigrant families in Canada dealing with autism. A recent study titled Autism, Stigma, and South Asian Immigrant Families in Canada sheds light on these challenges and offers insights that can enhance our practice.

Key Findings from the Study

The study conducted in-depth interviews with nine South Asian immigrant parents in Ontario, Canada. The findings highlighted significant barriers to autism diagnosis and service access, compounded by pronounced social stigma. These barriers are categorized into individual, service provider, community, and structural levels.

Stigma, both felt and enacted, was a significant barrier for these families. Parents reported social isolation and anxiety about disclosing their child's diagnosis. This stigma not only affects the child's access to services but also the mental health of the caregivers.
