Empowering Practitioners: Harnessing Research to Tackle Problematic Internet Use

Empowering Practitioners: Harnessing Research to Tackle Problematic Internet Use

Introduction

In today's digital age, the internet has become an integral part of our lives, offering numerous benefits but also posing significant challenges, particularly for youths and adolescents. The research article "Association of Individual and Neighborhood Characteristics to Problematic Internet Use among Youths and Adolescents: Evidence from Vietnam" provides valuable insights into the factors contributing to internet addiction among young people. This blog aims to guide practitioners in leveraging these findings to enhance their skills and encourage further research in this critical area.

Understanding the Research

The study conducted in Vietnam involved 1,477 participants aged 14 to 24, aiming to identify latent profiles of problematic internet use using the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire Short Form-6 (PIUQ-SF-6). The participants were categorized into three risk profiles: low, moderate, and high risk of internet addiction. Notably, 23.1% of adolescents were identified as high-risk, with factors such as age, living alone, psychological distress, excessive internet use, urban living, and neighborhood disorder contributing to higher risk levels.

Implementing Research Outcomes

Practitioners can apply these findings to improve their interventions and support for youths struggling with internet addiction. Here are some actionable steps:

Encouraging Further Research

While this study provides significant insights, further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of internet addiction and the efficacy of various intervention strategies. Practitioners are encouraged to collaborate with researchers to conduct longitudinal studies and develop evidence-based interventions tailored to different risk profiles.

Conclusion

By understanding the factors contributing to internet addiction and implementing targeted interventions, practitioners can play a crucial role in mitigating the negative impacts of excessive internet use among youths. Continued research and collaboration will enhance our ability to support young people in navigating the digital world safely and healthily.
