Step 1: Provisional Certification
The first step towards becoming a school counselor in Kentucky is obtaining a five-year Provisional Certificate for School Counselor, P-12. To qualify, you need to:
- Complete an approved master's level program in school counseling.
Step 2: Standard Certification
After earning your provisional certificate, you can work towards a five-year Standard Certificate for School Counselor, P-12. There are two options to achieve this:
Option 1
- Successfully complete an approved master's level program in school counseling.
- Complete an additional three to six credit hours from an approved graduate level counseling or school counseling program.
- Have one year of full-time employment as a provisionally certified school counselor in an accredited public or private school.
- Hold a valid Kentucky Professional teaching certificate.
- Have a minimum of one year of full-time classroom teaching experience.
Option 2
- Successfully complete an approved master's level program in school counseling.
- Complete an additional three to six credit hours from an approved graduate level counseling or school counseling program.
- Have a minimum of two years of successful employment as a Provisional full-time certified school counselor.
