Introduction
In the quest to improve health outcomes for children, schools play a pivotal role. Recent research titled Measuring Policy, Systems, and Environmental Changes at Elementary Schools Involved in SNAP-Ed New Mexico Programming, 2018–2022 highlights the effectiveness of implementing policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) strategies in elementary schools. This study provides valuable insights for practitioners aiming to enhance their skills and improve outcomes for students.
Understanding the Study
The research conducted in New Mexico assessed the impact of PSE strategies on nutrition and physical activity environments across 11 elementary schools. Using the School Physical Activity and Nutrition Environment Tool (SPAN-ET), the study measured changes in PSE scores from 2018 to 2022. The results showed a significant improvement in nutrition PSE scores, with a 17.6 percentage point increase, while physical activity scores saw a nonsignificant rise of 2.7 percentage points.
Key Findings and Implications
- Nutrition Improvements: The study found significant enhancements in nutrition policies and environments, driven by active wellness councils, improved access to healthier foods, and the establishment of school gardens. These changes underscore the importance of tailored, evidence-based recommendations and technical assistance in implementing effective nutrition strategies.
- Physical Activity Challenges: While physical activity scores did not show significant improvement, there were notable enhancements in specific areas, such as outdoor environments and shade structures. However, challenges remain in maintaining qualified staff for physical education, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Equity and Access: The research highlights the potential of PSE strategies to improve health equity, particularly in schools serving predominantly Hispanic and American Indian students in low-income communities. By focusing on these areas, schools can address disparities in obesity and chronic health conditions.
Practical Applications for Practitioners
Practitioners can draw several lessons from this study to enhance their practice:
- Utilize Standardized Tools: Employ tools like SPAN-ET to assess and identify gaps in school environments, enabling data-driven decision-making.
- Focus on Tailored Interventions: Collaborate with schools to develop and implement school-specific PSE strategies that align with their unique needs and contexts.
- Engage with Stakeholders: Foster partnerships with school leadership, wellness councils, and community resources to support the implementation and sustainability of PSE strategies.
Encouraging Further Research
While this study provides valuable insights, further research is needed to explore the long-term impacts of PSE strategies and the factors influencing their success. Practitioners are encouraged to engage in research initiatives and contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting effective school-based interventions.
